What do I need to own a web site?

You need a registered domain name, a Server or Virtual Server and the Coded Pages which make up your web site.

What is a registered domain name?

Each computer attached to the internet, including your own, has an internet Protocol (IP) address. This web site is at IP address 63.10.84.245. The domain name tcc-inc.com (our domain name) is easier to remember than the IP address (63.10.84.245). When you register a domain name, this is linked to the IP address where your web site is located.

What is a Server?

A "Server" is a computer, usually permanently connected which contains web sites of "Clients" to access ( the internet computer is the client). Having your own computer as your Server means you must be connected at all times to the internet, must have a high speed connection to the internet (DSL) and your internet provider must give you a static IP address. These items are not always cost effective. This is why Virtual Servers are used.

What is a Virtual Server?

Web hosting companies place many "Virtual Servers" on a Server. This basically means that the server is divided into a number of areas which each contain a web site. This is the most common way of having a web site hosted and also the most cost effective.

What do I need to sell online? (E-Commerce)

You need a registered domain name, a Server or Virtual Server, the Pages which make up your web site, a shopping cart solution and a method of securing online credit card authorization and payment.

Is TCC Web Development a hosting company?

We do not host web sites. We feel individual companies need different requirements to host their web site. We host most of our clients through Interland Web Hosting (www.interland.com) for only $19.95 per month. With this hosting company, we can have up to 150 MB of disk storage and 10 GB monthly transfer. This is enough storage for a common sized database used for E-commerce solutions.

Can TCC Web Development set up my own computer to be a Server?

Yes. For many large companies this may be required. For computer software development we have our own local Web Server running IIS 5.0 on a Window 2000 computer.
